The Myth of Sisyphus

An adaptation of the 1942 essay The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus.

  • A copy was loaded onto the peregrine lander which ultimately burnt up in orbit. Technically means I’ve sent a video game into space (though sadly not the moon).

Design and Writing

Though a Global Game Jam game, The Myth of Sisyphus is one of my favorite works. In it, you assume the role of the titular Sisyphus in his eternal punishment from the gods. The Player is made to pick up a boulder, jump up a mountain and watch it fall to the bottom every time. As the player’s movement speed slows and the narrative highlights how his task is pointless, the player (having stepped away from the ledge into void), speeds up with new found hope despite the task being exactly the same. It is a neat, simple and excellent adaptation of the essay of its namesake and the ideas therein.

Peregrine Lander failed launch

As a part of the DHL Moonbox program wherein personal packages can be loaded onto the Peregrine Lunar Lander, a version of The Myth of Sisyphus was loaded onto a hard drive in the lander. Though the lander ultimately failed to reach the moon, it still means that I’ve had the honor of being one of the few Game Developers to have sent a game into space, and one of even fewer developers to have a game explode in the atmeosphere.
